Family tradition flows to captain

March 28, 2018

BEING Bendigo Pioneers captain is a family tradition for the Atleys.

Rochester footballer Jacob Atley has been named to take the reins as captain of the TAC Cup side for 2018.

This comes after brother Joe captained the side in 2016.

Jacob said he was looking forward to the season and was happy to know he had the respect of his teammates.

Atley was a standout for the Pioneers in 2017.

He took to the field for the Pioneers on 14 of 18 occasions across the season.

Now, he is the leader and will be looking to take the Pioneers to what will hopefully be a successful 2018.

And his team was able to give his time as captain the best possible start on the weekend.

The Pioneers started 2018 on Saturday in Ballarat against the Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

Outmatched and out-gunned for most of the day, the Rebels went into three-quarter-time leading the game 60-41.

However, a four-goal final term for the Pioneers proved the difference.

Taking advantage of a poor kicking performance by the Rebels, who finished with nine goals and 13 behinds, the Pioneers were able to trim the lead back.

A few late points in the game saw the Pioneers level the scores, before taking a one-point lead close to the end of the game.

The scores would stay that way until the end, with the Pioneers holding on for a 68-67 victory.

The Pioneers will continue their season with a round two blockbuster against the Murray Bushrangers at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve on Good Friday.
